Stop your car, switch off the engine and savour the moment and the view before pulling on your fishing boots. You’ll feel like you’ve gone to heaven. Fishing in Alpine lakes is a truly special experience that allows you to immerse yourself in nature, appreciating its silence and its colours, the majestic peaks and the burbling sound of running water.
It’s easy to set your alarm for an early start and leave the house with your fishing rod, hooks, boots, jacket, grill and spices. You’re used to it by now. During the working week you often find yourself thinking of that moment at the weekend when you can set off for Ticino’s breathtaking valleys in search of your delicious dinner.
You’ve always enjoyed fishing, ever since your dad took you out with him for the first time. You didn’t know where you were going. He just said “It’s a surprise. You’ll see. You’ll enjoy it.” In actual fact you enjoyed it so much that even now, many years later, you are still amazed by the magnificent places this activity allows you to discover.
A perfect day’s fishing
Ticino’s Alpine lakes and rivers are simply amazing: crystal-clear water, breathtaking views, brightly coloured flowers, emerald grass and, of course, lots of fish just waiting to be caught by fishermen on a relaxing day out in beautiful natural surroundings. Fishing, either on your own or in company, is readily available in Ticino, from the bottom of the Maggia Valley to the Verzasca Valley and the little lakes in the Leventina area. Just make sure you follow some basic rules and respect nature.
However, that’s enough of the memories for now. There are lots of fish in that river and if you want to savour a delicious lunch washed down with a good glass of white wine you need to get moving: pull on your fishing boots, put the bait on the hook and cast it into the water. It’s not long before you feel a tug: will it be the first of many?
You start to reel it in. There’s a bit of resistance, but here it is: a lovely brown trout. You take it off the hook and measure it. It’s big enough to keep. The day has got off to a good start. You keep going and your mouth starts to water.
What could be better than fish wrapped in parchment and cooked just a few metres from the river where you caught it? You’ve come prepared and you take onions, lemons and spices out of your bag. In the blink of an eye you have two tasty fish and some vegetable skewers on the grill. An amazing aroma emerges when you open the parchment and you feel hungrier than ever.
Quick, pass me a plate and pour the wine. Enjoy your meal!
