An itinerary to discover what the pass has represented for centuries. A link between the Upper and Lower Ceneri, a place of passage for traders, merchants and pilgrims. The forests of Ceneri were home to the "bread of the poor", and a rural civilisation developed in its woods that still today bears witness to an example of a sustainable relationship with the environment, with numerous works and buildings saved from oblivion. A community founded on the rhythm of the seasons and on solidarity for a common destiny.
The Via del Ceneri is an educational and cultural trail. This segment of the historic Via Gottardo crosses the Terre del Ceneri, to continue towards S. Antonino and Bellinzona, welcoming visitors and guiding them through the rediscovery of a landscape able to highlight Ticino’s new central role.
The itinerary starts from the railway station of Cadenazzo and extends from the Ceneri Pass (Piazza Ticino) to the three medieval castles of Bellinzona. The Via del Ceneri seeks to promote sustainable, knowledgeable and high-quality environmental and cultural tourism. The route is lined with tourist information boards and other educational panels for learning about and discovering the stories of the local towns and woods on Monte Ceneri. The route connects to other hiking trails, such as the historical trail of Montecenerino, which connects Rivera with Quartino, the Strada Regina, in the direction of Lake Ceresio, the Hungerforts in Camorino and the Via dell'Acqua with the Via del Ferro in Morobbia Valley. This has created a network of trails capable of uniting the regions of Bellinzona, Locarno and Lugano and their main centres.
