While it’s true Ticino offers sun, palm trees, lakes and good food, we shouldn’t forget the snow and Alps. Europe’s majestic mountain chain stands out in all its glory in the far north of the canton, challenging those brave enough to climb one of its peaks.

The immense and majestic Alps stretch out in front of you, almost within touching distance. They take your breath away, leaving you bewildered and fearful for a moment and making you reflect on what is truly important in life.

You’ve prepared with great care. You’ve studied the route, checked the weather forecast and packed everything you need in your rucksack: ropes, karabiners, ice axes, helmet, gloves and something to eat and drink. You’ve also got your sunglasses because there’s plenty of snow where you’re going and the reflection of the sun is no joke up there. You wouldn’t want to miss the incredible vista that awaits you at the top?!

You and your travel companion tackle the mountain and its rocky walls patiently, tied together by a safety rope. They’re no joke either, although you already knew this when you left your car in the car park near the Nufenen Pass, in the far north of Ticino. To get here you took the Airolo exit and travelled through the Bedretto Valley, savouring its welcoming, unspoilt Alpine nature.

Up here, nature reaches another level and the rocks all around you convey the harsh nature of the mountains. However, you simply need to take your eyes off the rope that is supporting you to enjoy the view of endless expanses of summits and peaks, each with a white cloud perched above it like a hat.

You want to climb that spur of rock to reach the highest point and drink in the incredible view at 2’904 m a.s.l. You take a deep breath, fill your lungs with fresh air and feel light and free. It’s like a dream.
