Locanda San Silvestro

A place of silence and beauty in which to spend time relishing in the stillness of nature, history, and palaeontology, to find yourself and your rhythms by doing what you love.

The Locanda of Time Reclaimed
In a 1700s stone house at the centre of a medieval hamlet named Meride, the Locanda San Silvestro is a charming little hotel, a place of peace and in which to recharge and reclaim some time for yourself surrounded by nature.

Located in the Monte San Giorgio territory, a Unesco Heritage Site, the Locanda is reopening after an attentive restoration that was careful to preserve its memories of the surrounding territory and its original Ticinese architectural elements, including terracotta brick arches, stone walls, a columned arcade, and the antique well. This restoration also strove to make guest feel as welcome and comfortable as possible, by selecting a range of services such as: individual Wi-Fi in ever room that can be disabled to reduce electromagnetic pollution, high-comfort hotel mattresses and a pillow menu for dreamy nights, spacious showers equipped with chromotherapy, room service for both breakfast and dinner, bicycles and e-bikes available for guests at any time and the chance to organise tours, guided visits, and personalised experiences in the surrounding region.

The Locanda has 7 rooms available for guests for brief or lengthier stays: to recharge, spend time with friends, make the most of one’s complete freedom either in the Locanda itself - to read, write, work or relax - or by experiencing all that the surrounding territory has to offer, with its enormous range of sporting activities, cultural sites to visit, and natural beauty to immerse oneself in.

Each of the 7 rooms is different, unique, fascinating; in each room you will feel the spirit and rich history of the building. Most of the rooms contain king-sized beds or separable double beds, but triple or family rooms are also available. Their names are inspired by Silvestro, or ‘he who inhabits the forests’, and are named after the most common woodland scents found in the woods surrounding the Locanda.

You will choose the one perfect for you: small and enveloping, with a warm chestnut ceiling and a view of the rooftops, or wide and spacious with a columned arcade overlooking the valley? White and luminous under the midday sunshine, or with stone and redbrick vaults that warm up a cooler evening. Whichever you choose, we will make sure you feel at home.

In the Locanda's restaurant you’ll have the opportunity to eat simple, well-cooked meals, devised by a reinterpretation of local recipes that exemplify our chef’s love of good food and utmost care in its presentation. You will be able to enjoy a special dinner, a simple snack, a quick working lunch, or get a taste of a local aperitivo.

Our chef is Ambrogio Stefanetti, and it is he who lights up the signboard at the Locanda San Silvestro in Meride. Despite originally looking to open a second restaurant, it has only ever been emotions to guide Ambrogio’s decisions, and in the streets of Meride our Ambrogio recovered those memories that are so fundamental to the his cooking. Raised in Como, but Ticinese in spirit, his ties to the region have become his greatest strength.

Our kitchen, under Ambrogio’s steady guidance, is one that draws on all that the earth and gardens have to offer, with an understanding of the luxuries that can be created from simple processes. Ours is the sort of kitchen that first and foremost aims to make people feel at home.

Ambrogio’s concoctions are born from the constant creative research into the connection between the earth and the kitchen; they are a tribute to the land, to natural ingredients, and to longstanding traditions that cannot be forgotten.

And, much like nature itself, the menu develops and transitions with the seasons, sometimes even taking inspiration from a trip or two abroad.

On arrival, you will be met with a wide variety of spaces in which to dine, depending on your preferences: a candlelit dinner or drink can be served in the Locanda’s courtyard, which looks upon the  valley, or in the West-facing terrace; in winter, guests are invited to warm up in the converted barn, now adorned with a large fireplace, or in the wine cellar with a stone well from the 1700s for a selection of tasting menus or for small private dinners.

The Locanda San Silvestro will welcome you with warmth and kindness: this house so rich in history is waiting for you, for a unique romantic getaway, for a restorative break, or even for a work stay. Here at the Locanda, life moves more slowly, with enviable serenity.
