Is it the Grotto with the best view? The origins of the grotto have been preserved here. Its position in the forest and its rustic dishes give it a touch of nativeness. On the hills of the UNESCO world heritage site of Monte San Giorgio, lies this magical and charming place with an incomparable panoramic vista over Lake Lugano and the village of Riva San Vitale at its shore. From Tremona it is a pleasant walk leading trough vineyards and dense forests to the Grotto Grassi in a view minutes.
Operating for more than 100 years, it offers its customers truly local products, wines of the area and the welcoming tranquillity of a fresh undergrowth of chestnut.
Grotto Grassi is the perfect stop after a day “in the past” visiting Monte San Giorgio and the fossil museum in Meride. It is also a good gateway to exploring the vineyards of the Mendrisiotto by bike. Or a great place to relax if you’ve been hiking from or to Serpiano, from where you can take the cable car down to Brusino Arsizio at Lake Lugano and continue the journey by boat. From Brusino Arsizio it is also possible to take the bus to return to Mendrisio. From Mendrisio it takes just 12 minutes to Tremona by bus. Grotto Grassi is also accessible by car.
Of course the Grotto Grassi is also worth a trip by itself. Authentic food, local wine and a splendid panorama. What do you need more? There are also two covered Boccia lanes - “Ticino live”!
The grotto opens from Easter to October
