Accessibility of Ticino

The June storms have unfortunately left their mark and our solidarity goes out to all those concerned. We would like to thank everyone who is working to restore the balance in the affected areas. Here is an overview of the current situation.

  • Road situation in Vallemaggia
    • After the storm at the end of June and the temporary interruption of the road from Riveo, access to the Alta Vallemaggia has been completely restored. The temporary road bridge at Visletto can be crossed without without any time and user restrictions.

      The Bavona Valley remains closed.

For further information Ascona-Locarno Tourism where you also find a list of the opened touristic structures in Alta Vallemaggia.

  • Bathing in Lake Maggiore and rivers of the region
    • It is recommended to be careful near watercourses and to swim only in clear water, avoiding murky waters and where floating material is present.

  • Trails
    • Most of the hiking trails in Ticino are accessible.
Before embarking on an excursion, we recommend you to consult the website www.schweizmobil.ch.

  • A13 motorway reopened to traffic
    • The section between Thusis and Bellinzona on the A13 motorway (see map) is again open to traffic.

To reach Ticino by car from the north, we recommend checking the current traffic situation. Alternative routes can be via the the Gotthard Pass, Lukmanier Pass, Splügen Pass or through the Lötschberg Tunnel is recommended. The Gotthard road tunnel is also open at night to relieve traffic congestion. Alternatively, you can travel by train, with seat reservations recommended.

  • The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be fully reopened on 2 September 2024
    • Train traffic on the Gotthard (see map) is guaranteed, with trains travelling regularly on the Gotthard panoramic line.

The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) will provide 11,000 additional seats from Friday to Sunday to counteract the interruption of the Gotthard base tunnel until its full operation.

Small moments, a great experience

Ticino is still a fantastic holiday destination that offers many unforgettable experiences, even when right now the balance has to be restored in an alpine region after a storm.  Ticino is characterised by its breathtaking landscapes, mild climate and wide range of leisure activities. Whether you are strolling through the centre of Lugano, hiking in the alpine area north of Bellinzona or dining in the shade of a tree in one of the typical grotti in the Mendrisiotto - Ticino has something for everyone and over a cup of caffè in the piazza of Ascona you will immediately understand what dolce vita means. Look forward to an unforgettable time in Switzerland's southernmost canton.
