Casa Grande

The hamlet of Cumiasca is situated on a sunny slope above the village of Corzoneso in the Blenio Valley. It consists of three stately houses grouped around a village center (nucleo), a small church and some scattered individual buildings.

The center of the Nucleo is the Casa Grande with the French garden in front on the south side. Until 1908, the year the valley road was opened, the place was very remote and accessible only by a stony mule track. The house was built in 1886 by a wealthy branch of the emigrant Veglio family, who had been successful in London with their own cafés, restaurants and theaters and who, on their return to the Blenio Valley, had this very urban-looking house built.

The architecture is based on the Lombard architectural style. Characteristic of the house are its absolute symmetry, the representative wall and ceiling paintings with borders and floral garlands, and the traditionally used heavy granite.

The residence was acquired in 1981 by a well-known Swiss architect and gallery owner and was carefully rebuilt and renovated. The goal of the renovation was to preserve the original character of the house as much as possible. Contemporary artworks by the owners hang on the walls, tastefully complementing the original furnishing concept from the 1980s.

The Blenio Valley in northern Ticino stretches from Biasca in the south up to the Lukmanier Pass, which leads to Disentis. The region offers numerous hiking trails in summer and a snow-sure skiing area up to 2000 meters above sea level. Numerous culturally important Romanesque churches and a small museum - photo archive and former home of photographer Roberto Donetta - are within walking dist
