If you walk along the Via San Gottardo towards the centre of the village you cannot miss seeing two churches. The majestic simplicity of the stone used for the Romanesque San Pietro seems to point to the contrasting size and complex structure of San Carlo. As early as 1855 the idea came about for a new church, "to be more accessible to the public", and the work went on from 1890 to 1897, amid conflicts and financial difficulties. Milanese architect Carlo Maciachini gifted the design.
The building is in the Biascan style and is Ticino's only example of this architecture with a central cruciform floor plan, but it was never completed. During his time as the priest here (1952/1996), Monsignor Stabarini commissioned important works, such as the octagonal dome with its small loggia, a new floor, and the artistically crafted windows. The church holds a canvas from the mid-eighteenth century depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, a carved and gilded wooden tabernacle showing Paolo Pisoni of Ascona (1697), and a late-Gothic crucifix.
