Fiera di San Martino

An old proverb says: "For San Martino every must is wine". In fact, the saint is remembered on November 11, when agricultural work is mostly finished: once the fruit harvest, the preparation of supplies and autumn sowing have been completed, the winemaking process has also come to an end, hence the aforementioned saying.

An important moment for the Ticino of the past, for the expiration of agricultural contracts, the payment of rents and participation in fairs. Times have changed, but the San Martino fair in Mendrisio remains an event not to be missed, which has been renewed every autumn for almost four hundred years. Among stalls with countless products of the earth and brown cows, farmers from all over the region meet to sell, buy and negotiate, in a festive and contagious atmosphere, especially when the sun warms the November days.
