The image of the empresente. Fosco Maraini. A Retrospective

A fine connoisseur of oriental civilisations and an elegant and original writer, Fosco Maraini (1912 – 2004) developed throughout his life a photographic language of unmistakable humanity, capable of manifesting a profound inner richness in the mirror offered by the complexity of cultures.

On display at Villa Malpensata are more than two hundred photographs, many of them previously unpublished, of people and cultures, landscapes and interior architecture, details studied and taken in Japan, Tibet, Greece, on the Karakorum and in his native Italy. They are images "taken all'empresente", as Maraini himself liked to say with one of his surprising neologisms. Images, that is, caught in that unrepeatable moment in which the eye is given to perceiving the movements of the heart and soul. The exhibition will be enriched by a counterpoint of works of art and objects of material culture that transport the visitor to the places photographed.
