Ensaladas! Music, Theater and Morality in the Spanish renaissance

In the closing concert of the CaronAntica 2023 summer festival, the ensemble Concerto Scirocco presents a musical homage to the Ensaladas: four- or five-part compositions from the Spanish Renaissance that often contained a crazy mixture of different languages such as Spanish, Catalan, Italian, French and Latin. Ensaladas were a kind of theatrical and pedagogical church music, religiously dramatic, whose themes centred on the battle of good against evil. Ensaladas because the pieces combined dramatic, comic, popular and cultivated elements alongside different linguistic registers. The undisputed author of the ensaladas was Mateo Flecha el Viejo, choirmaster of Lleida Cathedral. The astonishing result of his ensaladas is an amazing combination of comedy and serious musical theatrics. The closing concert of the CaronAntica summer festival under the stars of Piazza Montaa, in collaboration with the vocal ensemble Dramatodia and Concerto Scirocco, will transport the audience into the surreal and rhythmic world of Flecha's ensaladas.
