A key highlight of this year’s programme is the exhibition “Calder: Sculpting Time", the very first show in Lugano devoted to Alexander Calder (Lawnton, Pennsylvania, 1898 – New York, 1976), one of the most revolutionary artists of the 20th century. Calder redefined the concept of space with his celebrations of movement and use of unconventional materials. The exhibition in MASI explores a prolific time in the artist's career, from the 1930s to 1960s, and presents around 30 rarely exhibited sculptures from prestigious international public and private collections.
Beginning with his earliest works, the exhibition is devoted to Calder's most innovative period, during which he created his famous "Mobiles" - his large, abstract, kinetic art sculptures - and the "Constellations" series of the 1940s, as well as some very imposing large-scale sculptures. Visitors will get the chance to immerse themselves in the creative process of this extraordinary artist, and trace how his practice evolved over the years as he developed his artistic identity.
