Nufenen Pass: A Journey Through Spectacular Landscapes and Authentic Traditions
Imagine crossing one of Switzerland’s most fascinating alpine landscapes: the Nufenen Pass (Passo della Novena). At an altitude of 2,478 metres, it is the highest passable alpine pass in Switzerland, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.
Whether you are travelling from the Bern region via the Grimsel Pass or heading south along the Ticino River, the winding road of the pass will take you on a spectacular journey, leading you to Lake Maggiore, 91 kilometres away.
Built between 1965 and 1969, the road connects Ulrichen to Airolo, passing through the picturesque Val Bedretto. Here, among towering peaks and pristine landscapes, the sources of the Ticino River emerge, the lifeblood of the region.
A Pass Steeped in History and Flavour
In the past, the Nufenen Pass was more than just a transit route; it was a crossroads of trade and culture. Used for livestock transport and the export of cheese from the Grimsel region, it often served as an alternative route to the Gotthard Pass.
Today, in addition to being an unmissable destination for mountain lovers, the pass offers a chance to explore the gastronomic traditions of Val Bedretto. Here, you can taste the famous Paste frolle, delicious shortcrust biscuits that have been a Slow Food Presidium of Ticino since 2007.
Let yourself be captivated by the wild beauty of the Nufenen Pass and the authentic taste of its traditions!
