In 2014, thanks to an agreement between the Municipality of Ascona and the Foundation for Culture Kurt and Barbara Alten, after a careful restoration the ancient Castle San Materno has become a modern exhibition space, home to the art collection of the Alten family. This important collection holds more than sixty works by the most significant artists gravitating in the German area during the period from the late nineteenth century to the First World War: from the impressionists Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth, to the artists of the colony of Worpswede (Fritz Overbeck, Hans am Ende, Otto Modersohn and Paula Modersohn-Becker), up to the expressionist artists of the Brücke – Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Hermann Max Pechstein and Emil Nolde – and those of the Blaue Reiter group, Alexej Jawlensky and August Macke.
