Chiesa di S. Maria della Misericordia

Adjacent to Collegio Papio, the church of S. Maria della Misericordia dates back to 1399, according to a Gothic inscription painted in the south-east corner of the choir.
The smooth gabled façade with a Gothic granite portal is preceded by a three-arched atrium.
Above the portal is a fresco of Our Lady of Mercy, attributed to the school of Maestro Domenico from 1490/1510.
The bell gable, tall and slender, bears the date 1488 in the plinth. The belfry and cone spire, in terracotta, in late Lombard Gothic style, certainly follow.
The interior has a single rectangular nave covered by a valuable painted coffered ceiling.
Above the high altar, a modern work by architect Franco Pessina, is a 1519 polyptych depicting Maria Assunta by Antonio Gaia, an artist from Ascona.
On the walls are paintings by Pancaldi Mola with episodes from the life of St. Charles (late 18th century) and a painting of the Madonna of Mercy by Giovanni Borgnis of Craveggia.
The church of S. Maria della Misericordia preserves a rich pictorial decoration.
