In 2005 the Regione Valle Morobbia restored Il Meriggio chestnut wood above Vellano. Over an area of 7000 m2 it pruned thirty-nine trees, built 600 m of paths and created a picnic area with benches, chestnut wood tables and information boards. The woodland is owned by the Patriziato di S. Antonio and extends over a slope that rises from 870 to 950 metres above sea level.
Woodland maintenance involves agricultural work such as mowing and regular grazing of the undergrowth, harvesting the chestnuts and the hay, and typical forestry work such as cutting back the woody undergrowth, pruning and thinning out the branches.
