Ragnar Axelsson, an internationally renowned Icelandic photographer, started out as a photojournalist for Morgunbladid, Iceland's leading daily newspaper. Soon, however, he became passionate about art photography and devoted himself to research projects in the most extreme places on earth: from the Arctic to Siberia and Greenland. Through a series of stark, black-and-white images, Axelsson captures the human and natural experience at the edge of the livable world.
The works on display in the exhibition Immense and Fragile: A Tale from the North are part of a long work carried out between Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands: for decades, Axelsson has photographed the "immense and fragile" ice and the people who inhabit it, motivated by the desire to bear witness to their value. His systematic and prolonged study has naturally also revealed signs of the fragility of this world - but his denunciation has taken the form of an act of love, rather than a declaration of war. With his artistic research, Axelsson conveys his experience and, at the same time, allows us to touch the power of the ice and its delicate situation.
