Petra Weiss. La bellezza esiste.

The exhibition dedicated to Petra Weiss (Cassina d'Agno, 1947) fits perfectly with the Chiasso Cultural Center's guiding theme for 2025-2026, pulchritudo. The artist began her career working with ceramics, but over time she engaged with the primordial elements of nature—earth, water, air, and fire—advancing, over the course of her artistic research, to a more minimalist, essential, and geometric phase. Her works, characterized by almost hieratic forms and a sophisticated use of color, invite silence and contemplation. It is a beauty manifested in the synthesis of natural elements and which lives in the exhibition space almost like a visual musical score, ranging from small forms to large vertical stelae.

The sculptor begins with the conviction that "beauty exists," meaning her desire to achieve—through the exploration of form and writing—an iconic, harmonious, and evocative image.

From her early production of "cubes" and "piles," sculptures that evoke primordial memories, she moves on to "pyramids" and "jagged steles," porous vertical blocks, and to "stelae," vertical sheets of painted metal. The next phase is characterized by broken spheres called "meteors," which bring to mind unknown worlds and universes of infinite constellations.

From terracotta, Petra Weiss moves on to the creation of sophisticated glazed stoneware and polychrome ceramics, then to working with marble and bronze; the artist also explores the theme of writing, proposing sculpture, dance, and music events in urban and natural spaces, alternating with numerous solo and group exhibitions. Petra Weiss's works are held in museums and public and private collections in Switzerland and abroad. The exhibition features over one hundred and fifty works in ceramic, stoneware, marble, bronze, and glass, documenting Petra Weiss's significant exploration of the material over sixty years of intense activity. The exhibition includes the installation of a permanent sculpture in the "Sculpture Park" behind the museum.

The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalog in Italian, published by Fidia Edizioni d'Arte for the Centro Culturale Chiasso. A rich calendar of events (lectures, guided tours, educational workshops, film screenings, and discussions) accompanies the exhibition.
