Lucas Herzig— and often means always

Manor Award Ticino 2022.

"e spesso intendo sempre" (‘And often I mean always’): the title of the exhibition by Lucas Herzig (b. 1988, Zurich), the winner of Ticino’s edition of Manor Award Ticino 2022, sounds like a fragment of a story. Established in 1982 to support young talent in the visual arts, the prize is one of the most prestigious awards on the Swiss contemporary art scene.

The exhibition at MASI Lugano Palazzo Reali venue is articulated in a non-linear itinerary, in which each room has its own particular character. Collected objects, archaeological finds, video recordings and natural elements mingle with papier-mâché works, drawings and wall interventions, with which the artist creates ambiguous situations. Indeed, Herzig's interventions do not allow easy readings of the origin, conformation and meaning of his works, but rather prompt us to reflect on the difference between what appears and what is, emphasising the inevitable subjectivity of interpretation.
