Liszt and Wagner: Transcendental beauty. Luzerner Sinfonieorchester with Sanderling and Levanov

Franz Liszt
Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major, S 125

Richard Wagner
Götterdämmerung (excerpts)

The Luzerner Sinfonieorchester's programme, conducted by the excellent Michael Sanderling, includes music by two musical giants. It is also an occasion to present the 19-year-old Israeli pianist Yoav Levanon, who will perform Liszt's Concerto No. 2. The technical demands in this work are high: Liszt certainly included passages capable of conveying a virtuoso performance. At the same time, it is not the tightrope walking that makes this music so enjoyable, but rather its ability to fit into a fascinating orchestral fabric. This is reflected in the music of the final opera of Wagner's Ring, the most beloved of the four works, along with Die Walküre.
