LAC en plein air

From July 11 to 29, 2023 LAC en plein air will be back for its sixth year in a programme featuring eleven concerts performed by diverse artists and ensembles from the world music and culture scene. LAC en plein air is the brainchild of LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura and is produced in collaboration with its artistic partners, the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana and the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana. It showcases a variety of musical genres like tango, jazz, and the sounds of traditional Japan as well as contemporary classical music.

LAC en plein air kicks off on Tuesday, July 11 with a concert by Salmo, one of Italy’s leading rappers, followed the next day by a concert with the youthful singer-songwriter Madame who will be preceded by Mattak, a young hip hop artist from Ticino. The programme continues with a weekend devoted entirely to tango from Argentina starring Camilla Barbarito, an eclectic icon from Milan’s alternative scene and the soloists of the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana. This will be followed by a triple offering that focuses on music coming out of Switzerland with a concert by the Swiss duo Egopusher whose sounds are a fusion of electronic and contemporary classical music, Amine Mraihi, master of the oud, a traditional string instrument, very popular in the Arab world and Nicole Johänntgen, multi-talented saxophonist from Zurich and recipient of many international awards. The programme winds up with a series of concerts devoted to the Orient featuring Wang-Li, virtuoso on the Jew’s harp, China’s most ancient popular instrument, the trio Violons Barbares, a musical and cultural melting pot of performers from Mongolia, Bulgaria and France, and Munedaiko playing on their colorful, sacred Japanese drums.

The concerts by Salmo and Madame will both be in Piazza Luini, the first on Tuesday July 11 at 9:30pm, the second on Wednesday July 12 at 8:45pm. All the other events will take place in the LAC’s Agorà (in the Hall in case of bad weather) with a starting time of 9pm and free admission.
