From J. S. Bach to J. G. Müthel – from Master to Student

After the success of the first concerts, the appointments with ancient music in Capriasca return together with the vibrant colors of spring.

The concerts of our nascent association bring the magic of baroque music to both experts and new enthusiasts in the splendid setting of the Convent of Santa Maria dei Frati Cappuccini del Bigorio.

«When a keyboard player has exhausted everything that Handel, Scarlatti, Schobert and C.P.E. himself can teach. Bach; and as Alexander [the Great] regrets that there is nothing else left to conquer, I would advise him to tackle Müthel's compositions, as an exercise in patience and perseverance" With these words the well-known traveler and musicologist Charles Burney described Johann Gottfried Müthel , adding about him: «...the novelty, the grace, the taste and the creativity, I have no hesitation at all in placing them [the works] at the height of the greatest contemporary productions».

Müthel's music is stylistically attributable to the Empfindsamer Stil, or the so-called "sentimental style", close to the literary movement of Sturm und Drang, in which gestures rich in affective nuances, strong harmonic contrasts blend with rhetorical and contrapuntal wisdom and with the brilliant use of improvisational elements, in an effective expressive synthesis of innovative resonances.
