Cesare Lucchini, la terra trema

The Museo d'arte Mendrisio opens the 2023 exhibition season with a major anthological exhibition dedicated to Ticino painter Cesare Lucchini (1941).

Born in Bellinzona and among the most important artists of his generation, Lucchini completed his training in 1965 at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where he lived and worked for the next twenty years. At the end of the 1980s, wishing to come into contact with the German artistic and cultural scene, he moved to Germany where he held studios in Düsseldorf and Cologne for a long time. Today he lives and works in Lugano.

The exhibition intends to retrace - for the first time in Mendrisio - the main chapters of Lucchini's extraordinary career, from the Expressionist achievements of the 1960s and 1970s to the influence of Pop Art and the confrontation with the German Neue Wilden.

Particular emphasis, however, is placed on his most recent production, which reveals, with incredible lucidity and equally profound poetry, a synthetic gesture in depicting the drama of our contemporary world, which has always been an inexhaustible source of iconography from which to draw.
