The Plot
It's Christmas Eve, in London in 1843, and everyone is preparing to celebrate the occasion. Only the old loan shark Ebenezer Scrooge can't stand this holiday. After having rudely chased away three men who ask him for a contribution for the needy, Scrooge, having closed the shop, goes alone to his home. During dinner before going to bed, he is visited by the spirit of Jacob Marley, his old partner, who died seven years earlier on the night of Christmas Eve. Marley's spirit is wrapped in heavy chains at the ends of which hang chests: chains that are the result of the greed and selfishness perpetrated while he was alive. Scrooge, frightened, asks his old partner how he can avoid the same fate and Marley reveals to him that he still has time to change his destiny. Before leaving, he announces the immediate visit of three spirits: that of Christmas past, that of Christmas present and that of Christmas future. The three ghosts, between flashbacks and premonitions, will be able to change the petty and selfish nature of Scrooge, who will wake up on Christmas morning with the awareness that greed for money and attachment to only material things are wrong: finally charity and brotherhood will make their way into the heart of the old loan shark, who for the first time will spend Christmas with his nephew Fred and his family.
Director's notes
The character of Ebenezer Scrooge, beyond the simple story and the intrinsic meaning of the Dickensian novel, could easily be traced back to a certain trend in today's world: that of indifference, intolerance, of being asocial, despite era of social media. Among a humanity that is moving ever faster, today we often tend to close ourselves in our own shell, in our own world, with our own cell phone and our own earphones, to isolate ourselves from everything and everyone. Therefore, the warning of the late friend Marley, who appears to Scrooge in the guise of a ghost precisely to suggest a change in his life and character, should be an exhortation for all of us, towards an attitude that looks more towards others. If all this is then accompanied by the wonderful music of Alan Menken, presented for the first time in Italy, then such a strong message can only become successful and positive to make us reflect, albeit within a fun and entertaining framework, on how much greater availability towards others could change and improve our lives.
