In 1996 a public Observatory was inaugurated on the Monte Generoso. The structure is open to everyone that's interested in astronomy. The centre disposes of many modern instruments and materials, such as the reflecting telescope Richey-Chretien, which has a diameter of 61 cm and a focal length of 5 metres. The movements of this tool and of the dome above are coordinated by a microprocessor.
Whoever is interested can enter the observatory and admire from up close the various instruments. Under request, educational evenings can be organised for individuals or groups (schools, astronomy societies, etc.) with the participation of expers of the "Società astronomica ticinese". Moreover, for groups of minimum 40 people, it's possible to reach it with special trains made available by the railroad of the Monte Generoso.
