Sentiero Smeraldo Stabio - Balerna

The "Sentiero Smeraldo" (Emerald Trail) is a project of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) realised in co-operation with the office of tourism as part of Switzerland's "Emerald Network". Its goal is to publicise and raise awareness about the Emerald species and habitats of Mendrisiotto - one of three places in the canton of Ticino richest in these rare and endangered species and habitats.

This stretch of the Emerald Trail leads from Stabio to Balerna and offers a nearly level, easy walk. Its special charm lies in the unique nature areas "Zona Smeraldo della Colombera" and "Parco della Valle della Motta".

The old Daniello mill (Mulino del Daniello) is well worth a visit. It communicates the history, tradition and knowledge of another era and is fascinating to old and young alike.

Two villages further on, in Balerna, our final destination, you can visit the School of Agronomy - a fitting conclusion to this very interesting tour.

Montagnepulite: This project was born to promote an effective management and sustainable use of mountain huts in Ticino, and in particular the litter management. The responsible management of litter in the mountains is a matter of common sense. We can all contribute:
