Sentiero Smeraldo Balerna - Sagno

The «Sentiero Smeraldo» (Emerald Trail) is a project of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) realised in co-operation with the office of tourism as part of Switzerland's «Emerald Network». Its goal is to publicise and raise awareness about the Emerald species and habitats of Mendrisiotto - one of three places in the canton of Ticino richest in these rare and endangered species and habitats.

This relatively short stretch features the «Parco delle Gole della Breggia», the first «geo park» in Switzerland. You'll definitely want to stroll around in this park and see some of the special facets of nature that it offers.

Start in Balerna and head in the direction of the stream. In no time at all you will have found the park. At Castel S. Pietro head for the hills and walk along unpaved paths and forest trails to the peak of S. Martino. There we recommend you visit the oratory. Sagno, your destination for the day, will surprise you with its old-time, traditional Ticino village character.

Montagnepulite: This project was born to promote an effective management and sustainable use of mountain huts in Ticino, and in particular the litter management. The responsible management of litter in the mountains is a matter of common sense. We can all contribute:
