Carona

Description

«Walkingtested» trail, that's been especially selected for walking and nordic walking (for evaluations and opinions see «see also»).

This very scenic trail, between the two arms of Lake Ceresio, offers you first a great view of the Agno gulf, Caslano, all the way to Ponte Tresa, then on Porto Ceresio and finally on Mount San Giorgio and Mount Generoso. It is rather demanding in terms of length but the whole trail is wide, easy and on even ground. It is well shaded and advisable in all seasons; in spring in the San Grato Park, you'll be able to admire the stunning azaleas and blooming rhododendrons. Departing from Carona's swimming centre, you enter the forest, soon come across the Baroque Church of the Madonna dell'Ongero, which was built in the 15th century and a place of pilgimages; from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Agno gulf. At about half way, you'll come to Alpe Vicagna, where there's a fountain; climbing up the meadows of the Alpe you'll find yourself on the opposite side of the Mountain. From here one re-enters the forest and through the trees it's possible to see the slopes of Mount Generoso and the villages of Maroggia, Bissone and Campione d'Italia on the other side of the lake. In this last part of the itinerary, you'll have to face a short downhill stretch which is rather tricky if the ground is wet or moist, so be careful. At the entrance of San Grato Park, you can enjoy a fantastic view of Mount San Salvatore and Mount Bré.
