This magnificent trail starts in Carena (958 m), the final village of the Morobbia Valley, and begins with a climb to the “Biscia” (2'002 m), where you’ll find the recently renovated Capanna Gesero refuge offering overnight accommodation or simply a place to rest.
From there, a pleasant, level trail incorporating military fortifications and walkways takes you to the San Jorio Pass (2'011 m). This pass played an important role in the history of the valley as a route for trading contraband, an activity many of the locals were involved in at the beginning of the last century, when they would set off from Carena or Gesero to carry goods in special packs across the San Jorio Pass. Rice, pasta, cured meats, fabrics and rugs were all brought into the valley, while cigarettes, salt and coffee were exported. The trade continued until after the war.
Along the route, you can still see the trenches and bunkers from the First World War, with information panels provided by Fortificazioni Ticinesi (forti.ch).
From the famous pass that divides Switzerland and Italy, you return to Carena passing the Alpe di Giumello (1'594 m), where an excellent alpine cheese bearing the “protected designation of origin” label is produced during the summer months.
