The Best of International Photojournalism at SpazioReale
Described as the most important event in global photojournalism by The New York Times, the travelling World Press Photo Exhibition visits over 120 cities each year and is seen by 4 million people. With around 140 photographs on display, it is the result of one of the most significant photojournalism contests, which since 1955 has awarded the best professional press photographers, photojournalists, and documentary photographers. Reflecting the intrinsic international character of the competition, the 67th edition of the World Press Photo Exhibition captures the countless facets of the world we live in, prompting visitors to a thoughtful reflection on contemporary reality.
Photo of the Year
In 2024, the World Press Photo Contest awarded Mohammed Salem the "World Press Photo Of The Year" accolade for his photograph "A Palestinian Woman Embracing Her Niece's Body". The image, taken at the Nasser Hospital morgue, shows Inas, Salem’s wife, holding their niece. The photo captures the pain and tragedy of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has intensified since 7 October 2023.
Story of the Year
The "World Press Photo Story Of The Year 2024" was awarded to South African photographer Lee-Ann Olwage for her work "Valim-babena", which portrays Paul Rakotozandriny, a 91-year-old man suffering from senile dementia, and his granddaughter. The story highlights how Paul’s symptoms were ignored or attributed to excessive alcohol consumption for many years, while dementia, an increasingly global issue, is often stigmatized in low and middle-income countries.
