From 2 March to 12 September 2021, the m.a.x. museum presents the exhibition The reintrerpretation of the classic: from relief to romantic vision in historical graphics.
The aim of the exhibition is to present the engraving production of Antiquity between the 18th and 19th centuries, tracing the historical phenomenon of the reinterpretation and critical fortune of the classic.
In the halls of the m.a.x. museum it will be possible to admire almost two hundred etchings, burin and drypoint engravings of rare beauty, watercolour prints, lithographs and chromolithographs. Among the exhibits are the engravings commissioned by Johan Joachim Winckelmann to represent antiquity, the stupendous etchings by Giovanni Battista and Francesco Piranesi, the evocative engravings by Luigi Rossini and the many views, including those by Nicolas-Marie-Joseph Chapuy and Johann Jakob Wetzel, landscapes of European cities that were the destinations of the Grand Tour, together with some valuable archaeological finds (coins, medals and marbles).
The exhibition is part of the "historical graphics" theme and is curated by Susanne Bieri and Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini.
