Let's celebrate the Summer Solstice!
An event organised in collaboration with Yoga Loft and Mamaste Spirit!
Registration is not necessary. The event is on donation!
Like last year, in the beautiful setting of the Cassarate river mouth, on the wooden platform, we will celebrate the arrival of Summer and the International Day of Yoga.
We will start at 7:45 pm with various teachers guiding us through the 108 sun salutations. We will finish just before sunset on the longest day of the year!
This year, the Summer Solstice falls on the evening of 20 June, while the 21st has been declared International Yoga Day by the UN, recognising this discipline's role in humanity's cultural, social and spiritual heritage.
The event on the wooden footbridge at the mouth of the Cassarate river is public and free of charge: we thank the City of Lugano for the space!
The practice will be suitable for all levels. The teachers will lead the classic sun salutation, but everyone can do the version they prefer and stop and rest whenever they like. The important thing is to come together to celebrate summer and yoga in a collective ‘ritual’, a kind of moving meditation.
Bring your mat and join us to greet the start of this new season!
Practising the 108 Sun Salutations means celebrating the life-giving light.
Yogis traditionally make 108 sun salutations at solstices and equinoxes to express their gratitude and devotion to the practice.
In yoga symbolism as well as in Eastern philosophies, 108 is a very important symbolic number: the moon is 108 times the diameter of the Earth and the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
In Sanskrit there are 54 masculine and 54 feminine letters, the sum of which is 108.
Malas, the devotional necklaces, also have 108 beads each corresponding to a prayer and to a Hindu deity.
