An alternative edition! Unable to organise the traditional processions on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday because of the pandemic, in order to keep alive one of the main living traditions of the Borgo, we wanted to create an initiative which would tell the story of the processions without showing them, revealing anecdotes and curiosities, showing objects, making the sounds heard, but above all talking about the impressive organisation made up of many volunteers.
From 1 to 11 April 2021 (except Holy Saturday) the streets of Mendrisio will come alive after sunset.
Along the original route of the Processions, projections on the façades of six buildings are added to the light of the transparencies, making it possible to discover the faces and oral testimonies of the Processions' organisers, which tell and in part reveal the behind-the-scenes story.
On the steps leading up to the parish church of Santi Cosma e Damiano, you can immerse yourself in a sound perocrso recalling the Holy Thursday procession. On the avenue of the Chiesa dei Cappuccini, the music of the Good Friday procession accompanies the visitor.
In agreement with restaurateurs, shopkeepers and craftsmen, the original objects and the costumes are displayed in the windows of the centre throughout the Easter period.
In addition, as per tradition, the altar with the Holy Sepulchre can be visited in the Chiesa di Santa Maria, while the Chiesa di S. Giovanni displays the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows.
