“Your photographs have something memorable about them, and they tend to leave a lasting impression on people, myself included, perhaps also due to the fact that they come across, in a way, as musical.’
This is how the famous Italian singer/song-writer Lucio Dalla described the work of Luigi Ghirri, the photographer from Emilia who succeeded in capturing the simplicity of everyday life in highly evocative images, just like Dalla did with his music.
This creative resonance led Ghirri to develop his own personal interpretation of the musician’s identity, immortalised in portraits and images of the places they travelled to together, which were later used for various album covers. Their travels together inspired new projects, which became series such as Atlante Metropolitano and Paesaggio Italiano.
On the occasion of the exhibition Luigi Ghirri. Viaggi, MASI Lugano is celebrating the extraordinary artistic partnership, and friendship, between the two artists with an exclusive event: “Lucio Dove Vai?”, a concert based on the project by Costanza Alegiani Folkways. This show takes us on a journey through Lucio Dalla's first musical season, rediscovering songs such as Annabellanna, La casa in riva al mare and, indeed, Lucio dove vai?
The album cover, a photograph taken by Luigi Ghirri himself, testifies to the deep connection between the two, who represented two complementary spheres of an artistic practice based on a common need to explore and communicate the human experience.
