The Good Friday Concert, Bellinzona

On Friday 29 March, in Bellinzona's splendid Collegiate Church, a much-appreciated appointment with the public returns punctually: the Good Friday Concert.

For the 2024 edition of this important musical moment, the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana and the Swiss Radio and Television Choir, conducted by OSI principal conductor Marjus Poschner and with the participation of soloists Anna Prohaska (soprano) and Josef Wagner (baritone), will perform the famous Deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms, a true milestone of sacred music of all times.

The singular structure, almost a cantata divided into seven large numbers (the texts were chosen by Brahms from the Old and New Testaments in Luther's translation) was perfectly suited both for funeral commemorations in churches and for concert performances, rising together with Giuseppe Verdi's almost contemporary Requiem Mass to the highest heights of sacred music, worthy to stand alongside the masterpieces Brahms admired: the oratorios of Händel and Mendelssohn, the Requiems of Mozart and Luigi Cherubini. In order to make the most of this splendid piece of music, the Good Friday Concert will feature an acoustic upgrade inside the Collegiate Church.
Before the Deutsches Requiem, the tense and concentrated Tragische Ouvertüre (1880) will be performed.
