The Polus SA tobacco factory was a major economic force in the region for many years. When it finally closed down its operations in 1992, the management decided to transform the premises so they could be made available for other activities. On the company’s 100th anniversary a concept was unveiled for offering guided tours incorporating a touch-screen and a custom-designed computer application to explain the tobacco company’s 100-year history and how it ultimately became a multi-functional centre. These “virtual” tours are offered in the landmark hall named after the Ticino artist Carlo Basilico.
