A sea of memories

According to legend, the island of Atlantis sank into the sea. This is the opposite of what happened to Monte San Giorgio: paleontological and geological studies suggest that this mountain, a magnificent green pyramid straddling the border between Italy and Switzerland, and more precisely the Swiss district of Mendrisio and the Italian province of Varese, emerged from the waters of the lagoon
that formed part of the Tethys Sea. A place that tells the story of a sea, reminders of which have been passed on to us by the fossils recovered, which are now exhibited in the Monte San Giorgio Fossil Museum in Meride. A treasure that has been placed on the
UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the global organisation that, among other things, highlights the value of the most important and unique sites in the world.
