The Gotthard Path: Giornico

The Gotthard Path between Erstfeld and Biasca opened on 28 June 2007 during the anniversary of “125 years of the Gotthard railway”. Large information panels have been placed near 50 interesting spots, including impressive buildings, natural features and masterpieces of engineering. They provide information on the past, present and future of the Gotthard area, the railway and the path, but also on the nature and culture of the Val Leventina and the Valle della Reuss.

The southern railway path is in Leventina. The second stage travels from Giornico to Parodino, passing through San Pellegrino and Altirolo, before making its way back to Giornico again.
This path offers stunning views of the Biaschina gorges.

What to visit in Giornico:
- the Congiunta, a modern construction dating to 1992, which houses a display of relief prints and sculptures by Hans Josephsohn, an artist from Zurich.
- the Romanesque church of San Nicola, first mentioned in a parchment from 1202 now in the parish church of Chironico.
- the Giornico region is famous for its vineyards and wines.
