The chestnuts

The chestnut tree, typical of the vegetation to the South of the Alps at altitudes of between 200 and 1,000 metres above sea level, used to be called the «bread tree». This was because its fruit, the chestnut, was the basic food for at least 6 months a year. Today, it is used to make a variety of products (flour, bread, cakes, marmalade, beer) and according to famous recipes: marrons glacés, as an accompaniment to wild venison, roast chestnut, etc.
