Forte Airolo

In 1989, with the 50th anniversary of the mobilisation and the 100th anniversary of the first fortification troop courses held in Airolo, it was possible to inaugurate a small museum thanks to the energy and will of the then commander of the Region 24 Fortifications Corps, Colonel Arnoldo Moriggia. The museum, which today occupies about half of the fort, has been expanded on several occasions.

What can you see in the museum?
The building, with its labyrinth of tunnels and casemates, is a true masterpiece of military architecture. The roof, entirely covered with Lavorgo granite blocks, pays tribute to the exceptional work of the stonemasons of the time. It is certainly one of the best preserved forts of its kind in Europe.

The original armament, much of which is still present, consists of cannons, turrets and observation posts. Various rooms display the weapons installed during the various modernisation phases such as machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, etc.

It is also possible to see elements of the garrison's everyday life such as, for example, the tableware from the officers' mess. The fort, very modern for its time, was equipped with electricity and, being perfectly autonomous, had its own bakery!
