Farmhouses

An “agriturismo” is a farm or other agricultural venture offering holiday accommodation – and the ideal base for experiencing the woods, valleys, flower-filled meadows, vineyards and mountains of Ticino.

Nature lovers, especially, will be enchanted by the experiences on offer at these “agriturismi”: holidays that are not only relaxing but also stimulating, promising direct contact with day-to-day rural life. Children can watch the animals close up, learn to milk cows or goats, and even make cheese. Grown-ups appreciate the tranquillity, as well as delicious local produce such as cheeses and salami, vegetables, fruit and honey. Active guests can go on extensive horse rides, while those with energy to spare can get first-hand experience of working life on a Ticino farm – hosts are always happy to have a helping hand for the odd day.

The chestnuts

The chestnut tree, typical of the vegetation to the South of the Alps at altitudes of between 200 and 1,000 metres above sea level, used to be called the «bread tree». This was because its fruit, the chestnut, was the basic food for at least 6 months a year.

Typical products

Ticino may extend over just 2,800 square kilometres, yet it produces a wide variety of top-quality wines and food, made by hand according to traditional methods using purely local ingredients. This style of production is quite different to industrial methods, and offers consumers products that are entirely local.

Make your Cheese

An experience not to be missed: you can make your own cheese using top-quality ingredients in a cheese factory in the heart of the Alps!

Itineraries

With its 3,000 kilometres of marked paths and trails, Ticino is an unrivalled playground for outdoor activities.
