Lugano e Mendrisiotto Lago Maggiore e Valli Bellinzona, city of castles
Lugano, set on the gulf of the same name and between its two characteristic mountains of Monte Brč and San Salvatore, reminds us slightly of the Brazilian carnival capital. It is a truly attractive city: the third financial centre of Switzerland but also a world-famous tourist resort. Its Mediterranean climate, the beauty of the landscape, the quantity of artistic attractions widely distributed both in the city centre and the surroundings, the architectural wealth and the lively culture make Lugano a very desirable tourist destination.
We can safely describe Locarno, together with nearby and smaller Ascona, as the pearl of Lake Maggiore. In a beautiful position and favoured with a mild climate and subtropical vegetation, the area has been a tourist attraction since Roman times. Assured of international renown thanks to the annual Film Festival, when the main square is transformed into a unique open-air cinema, Locarno offers a rich variety of cultural and artistic choices. A visit to the old town with its characteristic restaurants and innumerable small shops offering a wide range of goods would be enough in itself to make a visit worthwhile. Spend time cycling around the lanes, little squares and courtyards belonging to the old city, the public art gallery of Villa dei Cedri and the churches of Bellinzona, built inside and outside the old city walls. It’s worth going up the cobbled way to the castles of Castelgrande, Montebello or Sasso Corbaro, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since November 2000.
