For more than 60 years, the Film Festival has been transforming the city by Lake Verbano into the Swiss capital of cinema. Recognised as one of the most important cinema occasions in the world, over 11 days, Locarno becomes a meeting point for professionals, specialists and enthusiasts. Featuring evening projections under the stars, on one of the biggest screens in the world, Piazza Grande deserves its title of 'the most beautiful open-air cinema lounge'. The rich programme for the event offers a wide range of possibilities: from art house and innovative cinema, to the movies for larger audiences; from well established, to young and promising film-makers from different countries and very different cinema traditions. This year's Festival programme is divided into a number of categories. First of all, the "International Competition", reserved for a series of feature-ength movies from around the world and open to both established and aspiring directors. "Cineasti del presente" represents works of both fiction and documentary relating to realities observed from a national perspective. The "Pardi di domani" category is reserved for shorts. Meanwhile the "Retrospettiva" pays tribute to a big name or particularly representative genres from the world of cinema. Other sections, as well as several seminaries and forums, complete the Festival's prodigious programme, over 11 event-packed days. With crowds from all across the globe enjoying the Festival, an intoxicating atmosphere is guaranteed throughout cinemas, squares and bars, from morning until late at night.
